Better Know a Saint, March Madness Edition

I know it's a little late, but that's what a kidney stone does to you.

Who is this elusive saint? I know you are all pouring over your calendars, your BCP, even the internet for RC and Orthodox saints. Let met tell you what I found.

Nada. It seems basketball isn't worthy of saint, but I am going to change all that.

Here are a few Saints that exist now, from the Patron Saints Index:

  • Hubert of Liege, Patron of show dogs
  • Sebastian, Atheletes in General
  • Eustachius, Hunters
  • Julian the Hospitaller, yes even a juggler gets a saint
  • Julian the Hospitaller, Patron of archers (busy guy!)

Now this is what gets to me: where is the saint for basketball? It we weren't the the last throws of March Madness, I might let this go. But, I'm very bored, so I'm speaking for our teams. (P.S. Temple Fighting Owls --- come on guys, you can do it!)

The first of candidate St. Joseph of Paterno. OK, he's not dead, he's the coach at Penn State. And a very good one at that.

My second choice for the saint of basketball is: St. George the Victory Bringer (sometimes known as Gozo). He's also the patron saint of scouting, which could stand as baseball or boy and girl scounts.

So my vote goes to George, aka Gozo!

By the way, Here's to the University of Florida giving a big Gator Chomp to Ohio State!
